Decisions are often expressed in the form of policy, rule, order or direction. Decisions in general tend to be quite complex, but there are also decisions in which deliberation becomes more necessary.

The important function of a manager is decision making. Whatever a manager does, he does it through decisions. Every person has many options regarding work. Choosing the best among those alternatives is called decision making. 

Simon 's view that decision-making is administration seems to be very appropriate. All the scholars who consider the decision-making process as the focal point of the administrative organization, accept that the 'Decision Making Center' plays a decisive and important role in every organization and all other organs of the organization work according to the decisions taken by it. In the present time, the importance of decision-making process has increased a lot.

Characteristics of Decision Making:-


It is the process of selecting any one of the various options.

It is a logical and intellectual process.

It refers to the universal identity of the administrator.

Administrative decision making is naturally more complex, more complex, more challenging and scientific than political decision making.

Decisions are both negative and positive. The desire not to make a decision can also be a decision.

Objectives are included in the decisions, because decisions are taken only to achieve the objectives.

After exploring various alternative solutions, evaluating these options with a view to making decisions is an important step in the decision-making process. 

Evaluation of alternatives should be done keeping in view the following facts: 

️ Cooperation in the achievement of objectives

️ Cost of options

️  Suitability of options

️ time

️  Results of choices

It is the most important responsibility of the administration to choose the best option. The experience, experiments, research and analysis of administrators can be the means of selecting the best option. The daily experiences of the administrators play a very important role in decision making.


When a decision is made, the administrator should evaluate the effects of that decision and collect all necessary information in relation to them. Simultaneously, the administrator should also exercise control over the actions that are being taken to give effect to the decision.

It is clear from the above discussion that the administrator should keep in mind many factors and circumstances at the time of decision making. It is especially worth mentioning here that in every decision, all the above facts should be carefully used so that the desired objectives can be achieved. After decision making, its successful implementation is very important.
